Rewilding Journey After the Fires

Sowing Life, Restoring the Future

In Bolivia, every year, fire consumes thousands of hectares of forest. But among the ashes, hope also begins to grow.

At CIWY, we’re leading a post-wildfire rewilding project in the Bolivian Amazon that goes beyond planting trees. We are restoring entire ecosystems with native and fruit-bearing species that nourish not just the soil, but also the wildlife that depends on it. This is ecological restoration: bringing back the health, function, and resilience of the ecosystems that sustain life.

But regeneration doesn’t end there.

In the midst of the 2024 wildfire, when Bolivia lost over 12 million hectares (more than 11% of the country), a jaguar cub was found alone, dehydrated, but with her wild spirit intact. Since then, she has grown at our Ambue Ari sanctuary without human contact, demonstrating her natural hunting instincts and survival skills.

Now she needs a new enclosure to prepare for a life of freedom. That’s why we built a 1-hectare (10,000 m²) enclosure, designed to simulate her natural habitat, where she can keep honing her abilities until the day comes to return to the forest.

This space will also become a rewilding center for future wildfire survivors. Not just jaguars, but all animals that can return to their natural home.

Help us set this jaguar free. Help us bring a country back from the ashes.
