After several months of hard work by the whole team at Ambue Ari, Populars’ new enclosure has been completed – a spectacular enclosure measuring 40m by 20m, which encompasses an enormous fallen tree who’s roots are still attached and is therefore still living – which provides Popular with a massive playground and natural platforms. The location also means that Popular, who hates water, will no longer suffer from having a cage that floods. He was moved on Wednesday the 9th of October with no problems – he was put to sleep and carried to the new site, which is hundreds of metres away from the road and other cats. He is now adjusting to his new environment and massive increase in freedom – which he has deserved for his whole life. We have no doubt he will love his new home and new found freedom. Popular's Story: In November 2006, two volunteers from Machia, with the help of the police, went to a circus located close to Villa Tunari to rescue spider monkeys. When they arrived at the circus, they also found a puma being kept in a tiny cage. The volunteers wanted to rescue the puma as well as the monkeys, but the police would not allow it. But the volunteers fought with the authorities and eventually managed to rescue the puma, who was taken to Parque Machia, where he stayed until December of that year. He was moved from Machia to Ambue Ari, and was initially housed in the secondary cage of another puma Elsa, until a new cage for Popular was ready. His new cage was ready in March 2007. Financial constraints meant that this original cage was only 8m by 8 m, which did not provide Popular with very much space to move around. During his time in the circus, it is believed Popular was forced to jump through rings of fire among other acts. His prior living conditions and maltreatment left him traumatised and nervous, and the sight of ropes caused him a lot of stress and fear, which resulted in aggression. For this reason unfortunately Popular could not be walked by volunteers, which meant he was confined to his cage permanently. Much of Ambue Ari floods in the wet season, and unfortunately Poplar’s original cage suffered from this during many months of the year. Popular, being afraid of the water, was constrained to just a couple of platforms connected by walkways. It has always been a dream for Inti Wara Yassi to be able to provide Popular with an enclosure and life that he deserves after all the suffering that was inflicted upon him. After many months of fundraising conducted internationally by volunteers working with Friends of Inti Wara Yassi, as well as many fundraisers conducted by volunteers at Parque Ambue Ari, the money was finally raised to start on his new enclosure. Now, after the tremendous work of volunteers and Bolivians, his new enclosure has been completed. Measuring 20m by 40m, his enormous new domain encompasses a huge fallen tree whose roots are still connected to the ground, which means it is still living and will provide Popular with an adventure playground of natural platforms for many years to come. Inti Wara Yassi would like to thank the dedication and hard work of all of those people who have been involved in the rescuing and care of Popular over the past years, but also those involved in the fundraising and construction of Poplars’ new enclosure. Popular has finally received the home he deserves, and we are so excited for him to be able to start the next stage of his life.
Esto nos permitirá continuar con nuestros esfuerzos para dar a nuestros niños y nuestros adultos, el poder de hacer de nuestras casas, pueblos, ciudades, países UN MUNDO MEJOR! top Roots and Shoots Latin America 10/10/2011: Breaking News: CIWY will be participating in the first Pan-American gathering of Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots, Latin American and Caribbean! Twenty years ago sixteen young people in Tanzania, East Africa met with Dr. Jane Goodall to share their thoughts on how to make their country and the world a better place for animals, the environment and the human community. They were a mix of races, religions and ethnicities. They had one thing in common. They, and Jane Goodall, believed that one person could make a difference. But they also believed that a lot of people with the same concerns could make an even bigger difference. The sixteen from Tanzania have become hundreds of thousands in over one hundred and forty five countries and ten thousand groups that we know of. Now it’s our turn to join those groups to change the world, indeed to save the world. Nobody knows as well as those living in Latin America and the Caribbean how fast the destruction of the forests, animals and human communities is occurring and how important it is to turn this around. Roots & Shoots Latin America/Caribbean (LACRIB) now has over fifty groups in 19 countries and Caribbean islands. They are doing every incredible thing you can think of to make things better. What we have NOT been doing is sharing with each other, learning from each other, helping each other. That is what this gathering will accomplish. We are especially pleased to have Dr. Jane with us to listen, to share, to mentor. We are also honored to have representatives of the indigenous people of at least four countries to give us a perspective that may be what we need to remember where we came from and where we need to go. Earth Train and Nathan Gray, Leider Sucre, and his staff have performed a miracle in putting this together. We need to perform another one in creating a program then not only gives us knowledge and joy and wisdom when we are in Panama but also gives us the tools and information we need when go home. This will allow us to continue our efforts to give our children, and our adults, the power to make our homes, towns, cities, countries and world better.

Jonathan beloved son of Robert and Kathy, cherished brother of Sarah, and devoted pet owner of Russell passed away on September 7, 2011. Jonathan was deeply loved by his grandparents, Elizabeth and Bob Andrews, and Colleen Reimer. His aunts and uncles (Peter and Susan Reimer, Beth Reimer-Heck and Barry Heck, Laurena and Kendry Smales, Julia Reimer-Rock and Tyler Rock, Scott Andrews and Rob Almack, Susan Andrews) adored him except when he emptied their fridge! His expertise at cake eating and making people laugh was envied by all his cousins (Candice (Tim and Liam), Kyle, Jared, Kathryn, Alexander, Emma, Luke, Andrew and Karma). His early passing is a tremendous loss to his family and friends. Jonathan was a dynamic, thoughtful and talented young man who accomplished a great deal in his very short life. Jonathan attended Jennie Elementary school where he enjoyed working with the TASC class. This was the time in his life when he started swimming with Glencoe Gators. He won a number of swimming awards including the age group club championships. Jonathan attended Bishop Pinkham Junior High in the French Immersion program where he was often on the honor roll. Jonathan continued on with the French Immersion program while attending Western Canada High. He truly embraced the wonderful urban setting and was sometimes seen near by the dumpsters as he often chose to give away his lunch to the resident homeless people. He immersed himself in high school life where he played football, rugby, swam on the school team and participated in the environmental club. He remained on the honor roll due to his hard work and support by Carol, his tutor and friend. In his graduation year he played on two city championship teams. Jonathan then went on to work three jobs to pay for his dream trip (to travel to places where none of his family had travelled before). He particularly enjoyed his time working nights at Wallace-Carey where he learned to pack pallets quickly, convince his colleagues to their share snacks and to finally recycle their empty bottles. He also managed the art of working 12 hour night shifts while still finding time to date, hang out with buddies (Jon, Evan and Hailey) and play rugby with the Canucks. Jonathan departed with his three gr. 1 buddies (Ian, Andrew and Brandon) to South America in November 2010, highlights of this trip for Jonathan were hiking Machu Pichu and the time he spent at Communidad Inti Wara Yassi, Ambue Ari Reserve working with Leoncio the puma and Katie the jaguar whom he was responsible for. He spent five weeks enduring the Bolivian jungles so that he could walk both animals 20 km. daily. These experiences impacted Jonathan greatly and deepened his love for animals and thoughts of returning one day to work at one of the other reserves. Jonathan and his buddies also reveled in carnival in Brazil where they were graciously hosted by the Cavalcanti family. Jonathan loved the floats, parties and the bikinis on the beaches. In addition to his school activities and travels Jonathan learned to play piano, build go-carts, ski and mountain bike at the family cottage in Fernie and most recently develop his skill as a brew master. Tragically, Jonathan’s life ended as he started the next phase of his life as a student at Acadia University. He was excited to enter the faculty of science and play club rugby. He told his parents the last time he saw them, was that he planned to make as many friends as he could in the next two weeks. Jonathan’s spirit will continue on as he left a legacy of love, humor and deep enthusiasm for life. Jonathan’s organs have been donated for transplant as his family knew that this was wish of Jonathan’s. The family wishes to thank the staff at Acadia University, Valley Regional Hospital and QEII Hospital Halifax for their excellent care of Jonathan during this tragic time. A celebration of life will occur on Friday Sept. 16th at 2:30 PM at the Glencoe club (636-29 Ave. S.W. Calgary 403-243-2506).
top Regional Representative Interview with Paola Marquina What is a CIWY regional representative? CIWY’s regional representatives are responsible for coordinating with authorities and governmental bodies in charge of the environment in their region, in order to formulate plans to contend with and reduce animal trafficking, rescue wild animals, and return wild animals to their natural environment.
What does your work as a regional representative consist of day-to-day? My work consists in meetings with the authorities in order to promote law enforcement and encourage them to rescue wild animals. I coordinate with the authorities to seize wild animals from cruel conditions in homes and markets. Once rescued I coordinate their rehabilitation with the president of CIWY. If they require urgent medical care then I arrange that with a local veterinary team. If not then they are transported immediately to Inti Wara Yassi’s care in one of the three refuges.
How did you come to work as a regional representative? I demonstrated my capacity for love and loyalty, and my constant and untiring energy to work for the rights of animals and the environment. I underwent a number of threats in my work in defence of animals and finally decided to ask for the authorities for help in the work I carried out. These authorities told me about Inti Wara Yassi’s work and so I started to coordinate rescues with them. Once CIWY saw the work I was doing, they invited me to become one their regional representative in Cochabamba.
What does this work mean to you? This work signifies a satisfaction for me as I am able to give my grain of sand for those that don’t have a voice.
What is the worst thing you have witnessed in your work as a regional representative: The Cruelty and the conditions that the animals endure: they are transported from city to city in plastic bags in order to be sold. Also the lack of interest by the authorities to control illegal trafficking. I have seen many things: animals kept in tiny cages in the markets, baby monkeys that have had their teeth pulled out, kept in tiny cages together with cats and other domestic animals, parrots with no food or water that have been abused and had their wings clipped. I have seen parrots suffering from heat stroke and with no access to water, being sold in the streets with their feet tied to a stick. Recently the authorities, together with our volunteers, seized more than 200 birds that were found in 35 bags in a hotel room (featured in the last newsletter). They were in terrible conditions. Animals seized from circuses are often in even worse consitions.
What is the best thing about this work? The happiness that I feel when I see that the animals understand that we are saving them from cruelty and abuse and that they are returning to their natural environment. There are no words to describe the feeling of saving a life. These are living beings that have lost their freedom for many years, kept in cages and many without their mothers. Seeing them jump from tree to tree fills me with life and hope for the others who will also return to happiness one day.
Tell us about a memorable moment of your work: I have had many memorable moments. One of them was when we rescued Popular from a circus in Ivirgazama. It is wonderful to see that he is able to have a good life now despite the abuse he endured whilst being made to jump through fire. Another great moment was rescuing Chepeto, Villa and Ignacio from another circus. The memorable thing about these two occasions was that CIWY Cochabamba managed to start seizing animals from circuses with support of Bolivian law. My most important work has been in my mothering role for the puma Quirqui, and supporting him to have a good quality of life in Parque Machia. One of the worst moments was when we went to seize animals from a market and the people started to attack me and tried to kill me. During these times the authorities did not listen to us. It was a very difficult day as many of the animals stayed in the market and we were unable to save them. The truth is that every experience is good when it involves the animal returning to their natural environment.
How can volunteers of Inti Wara Yassi support your work? We desperately require supplies for rescue (cages and first aid supplies), and one of the biggest forms of support we require is financial support. We also need educational materials in order to raise awareness of this problem.

Please help us to keep the forum updated by adding your news. top **Mirador Update** As those of you are aware who were present during the construction of the road through Parque Machia, a lack of space throughout the rest of Parqye Machia led to the move of the Monkey Mirador to an area near the beach, as the old Mirador site was in one of the most affected areas by the construction of the road. Due to the heavy rains during the wet season, the River Espiritu Santu flooded its banks and as a consequence, flooded the new mirador location. Sadly this natural disaster caused the deaths of ten of our Capuchin brothers and sisters. The days following the disaster were long and hard: the remainder of the area had to be evacuated and a safe location for the rest of the Capuchins had to be created. This was done in Quirqui’s old area, where most of the monkeys had to be held in small cages whilst they awaited the completion of the new Monkey Mirador area, which was built around Sonko’s old cage. After a physical examination of all of the free monkeys who had remained in the old mirador location, these were transferred and introduced to their new home. It was an invaluable experience to witness again the warmest of greetings between the free monkeys and those already established in their new home and see them explore every corner in order to recognize that place as their new home, while taking full advantage of the delicious insects and some wild fruits – delicacies of their new home. top Noticias Del Mirador Como es de conocimiento de todas las personas que estuvieron pendientes acerca de la problemática del camino que atraviesa el parque, lamentablemente por la falta de espacio se traslado el área de Mirador de Monos a un área cerca de la playa, una de las áreas más afectadas por la construcción del camino. Con cariño, COMUNIDAD INTI WARA YASSI. top The Mirador has moved!
On Friday 25th March the Mirador moved to its new location in Sonko´s old cage site. Thanks to the help of all the volunteers in Machia all the cages were taken up in the morning, and then the monkeys were brought up by the mirador team, vets, and the help of Nena, Vladi and Rusber. The first attempts at cubing led to two of the free monkeys again free, but form was found after and by the end of the day all the monkeys except Monto, Congo, Freida and her new baby were in the new site in cages. On the Saturday, the longest runner in CIWY history (400m) was used to get Monto up. It was connected to his cage behind the tourist office at one end and his new cage in the new mirador at the other. A hole was cut in his cage, he burst out and then used a truly amazing amount of strength and intelligence to get himself past all the trees and other blockades on his way up. His entrance to the mirador being met with screams from everyone, and looking like the true alpha he is! Hopefully some videos of this will be posted soon. Now the real work begins, we have all the monkeys up, but still lack runners, a cage three set, concrete floors, an office and all the other stuff you need to run a successful Mirador. A big thanks to all the Mirador crew that has worked really hard to get us there, especially the returnees. Also a special thanks to Nena, Lucho he have done everything in their power to get us in our new home. One final big thanks to Rusber, who help has been irreplaceable, he is shaping up to be a Mirador legend! top Work with FIWY Are you passionate about CIWY’s work and want to help make a real difference in the work we do? On the night of the 19th February a five foot wall of water passed through the mirador killing 10 of our beloved friends · Tom, · Benito, · Gamuza · Motelito, · Menono, · Tin Tin, · Tony Montana, · Eddie, · Jade, · Chispita We believe and hope it happened suddenly. The water was from the main river and left everything in its path covered in black sand, the main river has never even entered the mirador. It is our belief that somewhere upstream something dammed the river and this then broke, sending a sudden surge of water downstream. For those of you who know the island, this was flattened and has now been almost completely washed away. The remaining monkeys have been relocated to the area that was quirquis old house. The big guys are stuck in cages, but we have some runners for Oscar, Timo, Dennis and Rusber. We have returned to cord Fabrizio, Raffi, Tita and Romeo; Budiman, Kikeen and Marco get to spend every other day rolling around the new site in cubes, or trying to flying fox their cubes on the runners! Frida shares a cage with Monto and the new baby, Skinny is sharing with Pea and her new baby, all the others have their own cages. Duce and Botas are sharing a cage and competing with Raffi and Fabrizio to be the cutest dark and light monkey combination. Finally, Wedgewood obviously hates his caged life, but seeing him close up, you can see how large his hands and feet are and he will be the next beast! Sonkos new cage was finished in a week and now we are starting work on the new mirador in Sonkos old cage location. Hopefully in a month we will have our new home and can really look to the future. Creo que todos podemos ponernos de acuerdo de que ella ha merecido esta vacación, ¡y la deseamos todo lo mejor para el resto de su viaje! top Nena in London Despite all fears of Nena losing her passport or getting lost somewhere between Bolivia and Europe, she did indeed make it to France for the One Voice conference (click here to see Nena speaking below the Eiffel Tower) and enjoyed a few days of culture and art in the French capital, before her long awaited arrival in England. A hectic schedule saw her crossing the country from London to Cornwall to visit The Monkey Sanctuary, back to London and up to Cambridge to visit an old friend and finally back to London in only four days. More meetings at London Zoo and the Jane Goodall Institute preceded a surprise visit to see Mama Mia on a West End stage (which many of you who know Nena will know is one of the only topics she can talk about almost as much as monkeys – or at least sing about). And although most people would be exhausted after such a hectic schedule, Nena was full of Abba energy for the CIWY fundraising party on Friday evening, which saw almost 40 previous volunteers (most of which were unrecognisable thanks to the addition of makeup and distinct absence of welly boots and mud stained shirts) catching up, reminiscing, swapping their recent (or for many, not-so-recent) park stories and pulling out some truly authentic ‘park’ dance moves that we’re not quite sure London was ready for yet... FIWY did an amazing job organising this special night that was jam packed with highlights from the personalised video message from Jane Goodall, to the phenomenal raffle presents, the photos of our babies pinned over all the walls and projected through the room, the video message from Vladi, Benita, Luis, Rusben and many other Bolivians straight from the Chapare jungle, and the presence of the ‘Reina del Bosque’ herself, Nena. And the best bit? Whilst having an amazing night we also managed to raise £981 for CIWY, which will make a significant contribution towards construction materials for the quarantine area in Jacq Cuisi. However... we still think that we can do better than that! Our aim is to get this sum total up to £2000 by the beginning of December in order to both start the quarantine construction AND complete the first stages of the clinic, so that in accordance with DGB guidelines, we are able to start accepting animals in Jacq Cuisi in the new year. If anyone reading this is a fan of round numbers and would like to help make this already impressive sum of money reach the £2000 mark, please click here to donate. Or if you wanted to come to the party but couldn’t make it, why not just donate the ticket amount? Many thanks to those who helped organise this fantastic event, and to all those who were able to attend and make this night such a huge success. Those of you who were not able to attend in person, were with us in spirit and we hope to see you at another CIWY event in the future, such as the Jungle Fever Boat Party on October 23rd in London (check out the Face Book event) or, even better, back in Bolivia! After an incredibly productive time in the UK, making connections with both the Monkey Sanctuary and London Zoo, both of which we may be able to carry out staff exchanges with, as well as meeting the leading expert in Primate contraception, and creating a formal link with The Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots programme, Nena’s time came to a slightly more relaxed end with an afternoon of relaxation on the beach in Brighton. Nena is now continuing her trip with a visit to Israel where she will hopefully be able to enjoy a slightly slower pace of ‘holiday’ than her time in Europe. I think we can all agree that she has more than deserved this break, and so we wish her all the very best for the rest of her holiday! top Nueva Carretera - 27 de Septiembre 2010 "Hola a todos Después de muchos meses luchando en contra la carretera, apoyado por el Alcalde de Villa Tunari, la Alcaldía de Cochabamba, y hasta el assistente del Presidente, hemos perdido la batalla. De Keith Franklin en el Parque Machía top Road Update - 27th September 2010 "Hola a todos After fighting in every way possible, from the local mayor, through the local council of Cochabamba and all the way to the Presidents right hand man, we have finally lost the battle against the road. It basically came down to the fact that the campisinos threatened to take the park by force, and start hunger strikes in Cochabamba, and that’s how you get an environmental permit in Bolivia. So to ensure the safety of the animals we have worked with the mayor to ensure no animals were caught in the way of the machines and that we were as best prepared as possible. All three machines have passed from Comunidad Copocabana to the tourist entrance of Machia. They have carved there way through both last years landslide and the old landslide between spider park and Gatos cage. It is a very depressing site and I have included some photos for you all to see. I imagine the road will be located firmly on the banks of the rio spirito santo before next wet season comes to a close. As the saying goes, every black cloud has a silver lining, well there has been one here. The new monkey areas have monkeys eating in trees, and Gato appears to be fine in his larger new home. We are now involved in the next stage, getting ready to watch Machia fall in the river and make sure none of our animals are affected, to this end we will be moving Gato, the Mirador before the wet season starts and preparing to be able to move both Monkey park and Spider park depending on how drastic the landslides are. Gracias! top Road Update - 7th September 7th of September 2010 As many people are aware the road is going ahead in Machia, the machines have started at the Copacabana end and are making their way rapidly towards the park, we expect them to arrive in the next couple of days. We have successfully moved the three affected areas, the Monkey Park, Spider Monkey Park and Gato. The Monkey Park is now located further up the hill, and we have taken this opportunity to improve our working methods, their plates are now in the trees and it is amazing to watch all the monkeys eating and staying up in the tress. The Spider Park has moved to Luna's old cage, and we are also changing their work practices, with food in the trees and more high runners. Unfortunately, one of the machos is yet to be trapped, so some of the corded monkeys will stay close to the ground for safety until the macho is caught. Gato has moved to the old Albifron cage, which is significantly larger and he seems to doing fine. We still have a lot of work to do in this difficult time to see these changes through, and are desperately short of volunteers. Volunteers are needed in all areas and any help anyone can give, as financial resources have been drained, is highly appreciated. top The Frustrations of working in conservation August 17th 2010 Anyone who has worked in conservation for some time will be able to relate to this story. After nearly 15 years of work at the Parque Machia wild animal refuge in Bolivia, where hundreds of species of monkey, parrot, turtle, puma and jaguar have been cared for, and many released, a completely illogical decision to build a road through the reserve has been taken by the local government, and will destroy much of the park which is home to so many of these creatures rescued from captivity
The road is being built to create greater access for communities further into the forest, but there have been countless reasons shown why the road is not for anyone's benefit. Apart from the fact that it will destroy an entire ecosystem for the animals and the forest they live in, the land is not stable enough to support the construction of a road, landslides after just one wet season will wash the entire project away. There are more appropriate routes for this road, but this happens to be the cheapest option in the short term.
Members of the forest community came into the park yesterday and started clearing the forest with machetes, without any authorisation from the government and without giving any prior warning to the park. The animals had not been moved yet and were forced to move as the trees they were sitting in were cut down. Volunteers in the park have posted more images of the destruction so far on Facebook, you can view them here Inti Wara Yassi, the organisation which manages the park, has been aware of this threat for some time and has been doing all it can to prepare for this eventuality. They now have two privately owned reserves (Machia is a state owned park) in Bolivia where they are hoping to move as many of the animals as possible, sadly though, many of the animals released into Machia will not be able to be moved, and their future is extremely uncertain. Staff and volunteers in Bolivia, as well as all of us over here, are doing as much as we can to reverse the local government's decision to build the road, but the way local politics works in Bolivia suggests it will be difficult. These are very sad and frustrating times, but are also times when we need to offer our support more than ever. Millie has grown out of her current cage and due to it's age and general wear and tear it really needed replacing. Thanks to your generosity we can now build her a new cage with more room and trees for her to enjoy. The new cage will be approximately double the size of her current cage, be made of new and recycled materials and provide plenty of shelter to keep her safe and sound. Thank you to everyone for your support, I look forward to updating you with photo's of Millies looking very happy in her new cage soon. top List for CIWY for free on eBay this weekend Do you have some unwanted items and would like to raise some cash for yourself and CIWY? Then why not list them on eBay this weekend? Pay No insertion Fee* for items in Auction format this weekend 3rd and 4th of July when you pledge to donate a percentage of the final selling price to Friends of Inti Wara Yassi. top Getting a new cage for Millie A big thank you to Tammy Schlitz, Machia volunteer who is currently caring for Millie the ocelot. She has started a fundraising campaign to pay to improve her cage, the cost of which is estimated at around US$1,000. Anyone who has worked with Millie in the past (or anyone who would like to help for that matter) please spread the word to help them reach their target. You can donate through the following page Thank you! top Camping for CIWY From Laura Coleman: top Parque Machia's newest pumita needs a name! The young pumita has been with Inti Wara Yassi at Parque Machía for over a month now and she is sadly still nameless. She arrived from a private home in the south of Bolivia where she was being illegally kept as a pet. The police found out about her and the family moved her to another house to avoid confiscation but she managed to escape and was later found wandering the streets of the town. The police banged her up in a cell for 2 days and CIWY managed to rescue her from a lengthy jail stay. She is estimated to be about a year old and is rapidly winning the hearts of the volunteers at Machía. KP reports that she's like a little Luna (without the bung eye) and by all accounts is equally as feisty. However, not only does she need a name, she also will need a home. To help with the construction costs of her new home we are auctioning off the rights to name this gorgeous female puma. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120563763684&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:GB:1123 The cost of building an adequate enclosure for her as she begins to outgrow her temporary accommodation is quite substantial so we are asking you to please be generous and bid high, $5,000 will build an adequate cage, if we can raise more then we can get an even bigger and better one for this lovely young pumita. We are also setting up a fundraising page on the virgin giving website for those of you that cant afford to bid for naming rights, but would like to contribute towards costs in some way. All donations will be very gratefully accepted and will go directly to the construction costs of her cage which are to be finalised. Thanks, as always, for all your kindness and support. CIWY's global family is vital to its daily running and survival and we appreciate and value any support you can give. top Fundraising Event Hi Everyone, top Congratulations Vicky Thank you to everyone who sponsored Victoria Stent for the Bath half marathon in aid of CIWY, your generosity helped raise almost £300.
Saturday 6th March 2010 was both a happy and a sad day for CIWY. Sad because our founder Juan Carlos Antezana is no longer president of the Community, the last few years of stress and strain had taken their toll and it was agreed by all active associates of CIWY that it was time for a change. The good news however is that vice president Nena Baltazar has accepted the role of acting president until the next election at the end of the year.
Juan Carlos founded CIWY over 15 years ago as a small action group of young Bolivians, it has since grown into an international community with tens of thousands of supporters and thousands of animals having been saved from captivity, thanks to CIWY’s inspirational work at their parks Machia, Ambue Ari and Jacj Cuisi. We owe it to all the people who have been involved with CIWY over the years to continue this legacy in the same vein under its new leadership. Juan Carlos is to remain a lifetime associate of the community. top Recreate CIWY in the woods of England On the 12 and 13 June, there will be a camping weekend to help us remember our Bolivian home that often seems too far away. There will be dirt, laughter, singing, chicken, mucho rum and maybe some animals too. Put the date in your diaries now! An annual reunion is well overdue for us CIWYians, and hopefully we can raise some money for these kids at the same time. If you have any questions or want to get involved, please email me youngpeopleCIWY@hotmail.com. top Victorias Monkey Marathon for CIWY Victoria Stent is running the Bath Half Marathon for CIWY and not only is she running 13miles, she's doing it dressed as a monkey! "I worked at Parque Machia for 5 months and love the place not only for the work it actually carries out, but for the dedication and love that goes into it too. I will be running the Bath half Marathon dressed as a monkey to try to raise some awareness and much needed funds for the park. Please dig deep and donate a few pounds so the sanctuary can continue to provide a safe and loving home for abused and injured wildlife. Thank you!" We are aware of a division between members of the CIWY directive in Bolivia, and a process has been initiated in Bolivia to resolve this situation. Whilst we are still 100% dedicated to supporting the work of CIWY in Bolivia, we are currently holding back any funds received into the charity until the situation has been resolved. The parks are still going ahead as normal, and there is still the same need for support for the development of the parks, and care for the animals. Please be assured that all your donations will still be going to the right place. At the same time, we would like to make clear our support for Tania Baltazar and everyone who works with her in everything that they do for CIWY. It is the baby of Juanita, and its healthy and growing fast. Juanita is looking after it well but it needs a name – and that’s where you come in. We are running an eBay auction and the winner will get to name the new baby, the money raised will go toward the relocation and reconstruction costs of a new mirador since the existing mirador has fallen victim to massive landslides and the destabilisation of the surrounding jungle as a direct result of the clearance that was done in preparation for the road last year. The relocation of the mirador is a huge and very urgent project and the funds raised by this auction will be very gratefully received. The parks are very low on volunteer numbers and this means that all the money coming into the park is being spent directly on the daily running costs of the park and there are currently little or no funds available for this project. Please see the Inti Wara Yassi facebook page under the discussion 'mirador updates' for further information about the relocation of the mirador. As always, please dig deep and give generously. If you don’t wish to bid but would like to help out financially donations can also be made directly through the website at www.intiwarayassi.org whatever you can donate will make a difference. She was visiting Bolivia as part of a South American tour, where she was giving talks to many different groups of people about her work to help prevent the destruction of our planet. A few years ago, she had named the head of the Inti Wara Yassi animal sanctuaries - Juan Carlos Antezana, pictured above with Jane - as one of her "Heroes of the Planet" in an Animal Planet documentary, but this was the first time she had the chance to meet him in person. Jane with Nena at Parque Machia Her visit coincided with that of a group of children from a local orphanage. The combination of protecting animals and working with disadvantaged children was something which fitted in perfectly with her Roots and Shoots educational programme, which she is planning on launching in Bolivia. We were all honored to meet her as she is a truly inspirational woman. top Thank you A huge thank you to everyone who has donated to the Jacj Cuisi urgent appeal, I am delighted to announce that not only have we reached the funds needed to secure the land but you have surpassed it. top Park destruction continues in midst of false promises
Yesterday was another sad say for Parque Machia and for conservation in Bolivia. Last week the Bolivian Environment Agency (DGB) made an agreement with the local mayor's office in Villa Tunari, that no more work would be done on the road until a new home was made for the animals in its path. Well yesterday (18th September), the destruction of the park continued in spite of this agreement. Trees fell onto monkey runners in the mirador section of the park, even a volunteer was nearly crushed by a falling tree. We ask that this blatant disregard for the environment AND their own laws be denounced through any means possible, contact your local paper, your national TV station, anyone which could help to cease this carnage. top THE FUTURE OF PARQUE MACHIA AT RISK!!
In early August 2008, we received a visit from public works technicians from the Mayors office in Villa Tunari, with the view to inspecting Parque Machia as a route for a new planned road. Following the visit, we requested further information from the Mayors office about the planned project. Following this request, the 19th of August, we receive an official notification from the Mayor’s office – CITE H.A.M V.T Nº 884-08 – inviting us to a meeting to discuss this project. This meeting was attended by only one of the public works technicians (none of the council officials), where a five minute talk informed us of the definitive decision to open a road through the Park. The main reasons given for the opening of the road were to give more access for the communities further into the forest, and to allow greater access for tourism in vehicles. To determine the opening of this road, many criteria were not considered, such as:
The areas which would be directly affected would be the following
This is why we have concluded that no consideration has been made for the wellbeing of the animals, not to mention the fact that Parque Machia is considered an area of National Heritage, meaning no damage to the biological, genetic and ecological diversity should be allowed. On the 20th August the same year, we received a communication from the Mayor’s office, we were instructed that the animals would need to be moved and accommodated elsewhere, to allow the start of construction. We were visited by members fo the council on the 27th August, consisting of the director of environment, director of tourism, two councillors, an architect, civil engineer and a representative of the company contracted to open the road, who informed us we had 5 days to move and re house the animals. An appeal was made to the local authorities and to the press, and the work was stopped. The Mayor stated to the press that the road would no longer be made. This turned out to be a lie, because this year the work began again to open the road. We appealed again to the environmental and local authorities to explain what this would mean. At this point the National Environment Agency (DGBAP) intervened, but even they did not have the power to stop this destruction. That said, the Mayor of Villa Tunari commited to provide new land for the expanson of the land – although this never took place. Even more shocking was, this year on the 18th August, the work began on opening the road, without any authorization from the authorities or any environmental impact study – a legal requirement. The animals are already being affected by this work. The noise from the tractors and chainsaws are making many of the primates and felines more aggresive, and many of the animals are being scared off, putting their lives in serious danger. WHEN THE LAST TREE IS CUT, WHEN THE LAST RIVER IS CONTAMINATED, WHEN THE LAST ANIMAL IS KILLED ONLY THEN WILL MAN REALISE THAT WE CANNOT SURVIVE WITH MONEY ALONE....!!! top $2,100 raised for Jacj Cuisi Fantastic news - $2,100 has been donated to the Jacj Cuisi Urgent Appeal since it began, from $5 to $500 everyone has been digging deep into their pockets for this fantastic appeal - Thank you to everyone who has donated and to all of Inti Wara Yassi's supporters. [Articulo de opinion.com] top House has been bought! Monday 10th March 2008 We're delighted to say that the house (which was campaigned for back in last September) has finally been bought and contracts have exchanged hands. After a long and drawn out process, where negotiations seemed to be never ending, both buyers and sellers came to an agreement, and CIWY's place in Villa Tunari is so much more secure than it has ever been. The ownership of the building which houses the cafe, clinic and vet's accommodation, plus the Casa de Voluntarios, plus land behind where the quarantine areas are, allows the park to make the improvements they have been wanting to for many years but haven't been able to as the buildings weren't theirs. The food preparation area will move to the casa, as will a more organised administration area, both of which were essential improvements to be able to gain the "official eco-park" status from the Bolivian government. Once again, THANK YOU to everyone who has helped! top Un mensaje por parte de Juan Carlos Antezana, Fundador de Inti Wara Yassi

top A message from Juan Carlos Antezana, Founder of Inti Wara Yassi
Dear volunteers!
For me it is a great joy to have you working here at the Inti Wara Yassi
refuges. Working non-stop to help our brothers and sisters, the pumas, jaguars,
monkeys, birds and snakes! God bless you, you are the 'Inti Wara Yassis', you
are the people who have gained our highest respect because you are working not
for yourself, but for a whole community of people here in Bolivia, our family
of children, people, animals that all wish to defend life. Although this takes a
lot of sacrifice we have managed together to set up these two refuges to give
the animals a second chance and to give you the opportunity of helping out.
I wish you all the best for 2008! That it may be a year full of success
stories.
Say it aloud to the world: say the word Inti, the word Wara, the word
Yassi!
top Urgent Appeal Update Very happy to let you know that we've raised and sent $34,000 / £17,000 to Bolivia ! ! ! ! ! This should cover the asking price and the legal fees.... The response was absolutely incredible - everyone around the world chipped in and I was getting 3 or 4 big donations every day on PayPal alone - I've no idea what the bank account looked like except that WE'VE MADE IT ! ! ! And that the response of everyone around the world is absolutely incredible - I've never known a fundraising drive like it ! I first posted this to the website only 2.5 weeks ago.....(although it was on facebook etc before this). Obviously we've still got to go through all the legal processes and we can't completely relax until everything's signed, but even though there's still this uncertainty we thought it best to let everyone know how amazing everyone's been. A special mention must be made of the Gibson family and Castle Precision Engineering, who donated an unbelievable $20,000 / £10,000. top Message from Nena - news about Sama We are very happy because for long time we had a dream about giving Sama a better life and I want to tell you that thanks to God this dream has come true. Thanks to a person who felt in her heart the need to give a big donation to buy the construction materials, this person is Vanesa, whom we'd like to thank from our heart and we wish God will bless her through her life. We would also like to thank Quest Overseas and specially Tim's group because it was them who did the toughest work carrying the stones and all the materials.
