The Frustrations of working in conservation August 17th 2010 Anyone who has worked in conservation for some time will be able to relate to this story. After nearly 15 years of work at the Parque Machia wild animal refuge in Bolivia, where hundreds of species of monkey, parrot, turtle, puma and jaguar have been cared for, and many released, a completely illogical decision to build a road through the reserve has been taken by the local government, and will destroy much of the park which is home to so many of these creatures rescued from captivity
The road is being built to create greater access for communities further into the forest, but there have been countless reasons shown why the road is not for anyone's benefit. Apart from the fact that it will destroy an entire ecosystem for the animals and the forest they live in, the land is not stable enough to support the construction of a road, landslides after just one wet season will wash the entire project away. There are more appropriate routes for this road, but this happens to be the cheapest option in the short term.
Members of the forest community came into the park yesterday and started clearing the forest with machetes, without any authorisation from the government and without giving any prior warning to the park. The animals had not been moved yet and were forced to move as the trees they were sitting in were cut down. Volunteers in the park have posted more images of the destruction so far on Facebook, you can view them here Inti Wara Yassi, the organisation which manages the park, has been aware of this threat for some time and has been doing all it can to prepare for this eventuality. They now have two privately owned reserves (Machia is a state owned park) in Bolivia where they are hoping to move as many of the animals as possible, sadly though, many of the animals released into Machia will not be able to be moved, and their future is extremely uncertain. Staff and volunteers in Bolivia, as well as all of us over here, are doing as much as we can to reverse the local government's decision to build the road, but the way local politics works in Bolivia suggests it will be difficult. These are very sad and frustrating times, but are also times when we need to offer our support more than ever. PUEDEN BAJAR LA NOTA DE PRENSA AQUI top Road to be built through Parque Machia - UPDATE 5 Aug 10 After so much work to show that the planned road through Parque Machia is a bad idea both for the park and the local communities, the construction is still planning to go ahead, and will be starting any day now. We are trying one last time to spread the word and prevent this senseless destruction and are sending a press release to as many people as will receive it. Please help us by spreading the word to any organisation or media source you think will be interested to know. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THE PRESS RELEASE HERE top Thank you from Simba Simba also wants to say THANK YOU very very much for building me the biggest enclosure Jacj Cuisi currently has! Bigger than Luna´s!! He is loving his new home. He moved in 2 days ago!! Thank you to all the Quest groups and the rest of the volunteers that slugged it out carrying bags of cement, rocks, sand, and mesh, water, etc to his new home! We couldn´t have done it without you! top Une Nueva Jaula para Millie - Gracias Queremos agradecer a todos quienes han apoyado nuestra peticion para construir una nueva jaula para Millie, un ocelote en el Parque Machia que tiene 9 anyos. top A new Cage for Millie - Thank you We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has supported our appeal to build a new cage for Millie, a 9year old Ocelot living at Parque Machia.
As many of you know Millie was brought to us at just three weeks old after her mother had been killed and sold for her coat. Millie has grown out of her current cage and due to it's age and general wear and tear it really needed replacing. Thanks to your generosity we can now build her a new cage with more room and trees for her to enjoy. The new cage will be approximately double the size of her current cage, be made of new and recycled materials and provide plenty of shelter to keep her safe and sound. Thank you to everyone for your support, I look forward to updating you with photo's of Millies looking very happy in her new cage soon. top List for CIWY for free on eBay this weekend Do you have some unwanted items and would like to raise some cash for yourself and CIWY? Then why not list them on eBay this weekend? Pay No insertion Fee* for items in Auction format this weekend 3rd and 4th of July when you pledge to donate a percentage of the final selling price to Friends of Inti Wara Yassi. top Getting a new cage for Millie A big thank you to Tammy Schlitz, Machia volunteer who is currently caring for Millie the ocelot. She has started a fundraising campaign to pay to improve her cage, the cost of which is estimated at around US$1,000. Anyone who has worked with Millie in the past (or anyone who would like to help for that matter) please spread the word to help them reach their target. You can donate through the following page Thank you! top Camping for CIWY From Laura Coleman: top Parque Machia's newest pumita needs a name! The young pumita has been with Inti Wara Yassi at Parque Machía for over a month now and she is sadly still nameless. She arrived from a private home in the south of Bolivia where she was being illegally kept as a pet. The police found out about her and the family moved her to another house to avoid confiscation but she managed to escape and was later found wandering the streets of the town. The police banged her up in a cell for 2 days and CIWY managed to rescue her from a lengthy jail stay. She is estimated to be about a year old and is rapidly winning the hearts of the volunteers at Machía. KP reports that she's like a little Luna (without the bung eye) and by all accounts is equally as feisty. However, not only does she need a name, she also will need a home. To help with the construction costs of her new home we are auctioning off the rights to name this gorgeous female puma. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120563763684&ssPageName=ADME:L:LCA:GB:1123 The cost of building an adequate enclosure for her as she begins to outgrow her temporary accommodation is quite substantial so we are asking you to please be generous and bid high, $5,000 will build an adequate cage, if we can raise more then we can get an even bigger and better one for this lovely young pumita. We are also setting up a fundraising page on the virgin giving website for those of you that cant afford to bid for naming rights, but would like to contribute towards costs in some way. All donations will be very gratefully accepted and will go directly to the construction costs of her cage which are to be finalised. Thanks, as always, for all your kindness and support. CIWY's global family is vital to its daily running and survival and we appreciate and value any support you can give. top Fundraising Event Hi Everyone, top Congratulations Vicky Thank you to everyone who sponsored Victoria Stent for the Bath half marathon in aid of CIWY, your generosity helped raise almost £300.
Saturday 6th March 2010 was both a happy and a sad day for CIWY. Sad because our founder Juan Carlos Antezana is no longer president of the Community, the last few years of stress and strain had taken their toll and it was agreed by all active associates of CIWY that it was time for a change. The good news however is that vice president Nena Baltazar has accepted the role of acting president until the next election at the end of the year.
Juan Carlos founded CIWY over 15 years ago as a small action group of young Bolivians, it has since grown into an international community with tens of thousands of supporters and thousands of animals having been saved from captivity, thanks to CIWY’s inspirational work at their parks Machia, Ambue Ari and Jacj Cuisi. We owe it to all the people who have been involved with CIWY over the years to continue this legacy in the same vein under its new leadership. Juan Carlos is to remain a lifetime associate of the community. top Recreate CIWY in the woods of England On the 12 and 13 June, there will be a camping weekend to help us remember our Bolivian home that often seems too far away. There will be dirt, laughter, singing, chicken, mucho rum and maybe some animals too. Put the date in your diaries now! An annual reunion is well overdue for us CIWYians, and hopefully we can raise some money for these kids at the same time. If you have any questions or want to get involved, please email me youngpeopleCIWY@hotmail.com. top Victorias Monkey Marathon for CIWY Victoria Stent is running the Bath Half Marathon for CIWY and not only is she running 13miles, she's doing it dressed as a monkey! "I worked at Parque Machia for 5 months and love the place not only for the work it actually carries out, but for the dedication and love that goes into it too. I will be running the Bath half Marathon dressed as a monkey to try to raise some awareness and much needed funds for the park. Please dig deep and donate a few pounds so the sanctuary can continue to provide a safe and loving home for abused and injured wildlife. Thank you!" We are aware of a division between members of the CIWY directive in Bolivia, and a process has been initiated in Bolivia to resolve this situation. Whilst we are still 100% dedicated to supporting the work of CIWY in Bolivia, we are currently holding back any funds received into the charity until the situation has been resolved. The parks are still going ahead as normal, and there is still the same need for support for the development of the parks, and care for the animals. Please be assured that all your donations will still be going to the right place. At the same time, we would like to make clear our support for Tania Baltazar and everyone who works with her in everything that they do for CIWY. It is the baby of Juanita, and its healthy and growing fast. Juanita is looking after it well but it needs a name – and that’s where you come in. We are running an eBay auction and the winner will get to name the new baby, the money raised will go toward the relocation and reconstruction costs of a new mirador since the existing mirador has fallen victim to massive landslides and the destabilisation of the surrounding jungle as a direct result of the clearance that was done in preparation for the road last year. The relocation of the mirador is a huge and very urgent project and the funds raised by this auction will be very gratefully received. The parks are very low on volunteer numbers and this means that all the money coming into the park is being spent directly on the daily running costs of the park and there are currently little or no funds available for this project. Please see the Inti Wara Yassi facebook page under the discussion 'mirador updates' for further information about the relocation of the mirador. As always, please dig deep and give generously. If you don’t wish to bid but would like to help out financially donations can also be made directly through the website at www.intiwarayassi.org whatever you can donate will make a difference. She was visiting Bolivia as part of a South American tour, where she was giving talks to many different groups of people about her work to help prevent the destruction of our planet. A few years ago, she had named the head of the Inti Wara Yassi animal sanctuaries - Juan Carlos Antezana, pictured above with Jane - as one of her "Heroes of the Planet" in an Animal Planet documentary, but this was the first time she had the chance to meet him in person. Jane with Nena at Parque Machia Her visit coincided with that of a group of children from a local orphanage. The combination of protecting animals and working with disadvantaged children was something which fitted in perfectly with her Roots and Shoots educational programme, which she is planning on launching in Bolivia. We were all honored to meet her as she is a truly inspirational woman. top Thank you A huge thank you to everyone who has donated to the Jacj Cuisi urgent appeal, I am delighted to announce that not only have we reached the funds needed to secure the land but you have surpassed it. top Park destruction continues in midst of false promises
Yesterday was another sad say for Parque Machia and for conservation in Bolivia. Last week the Bolivian Environment Agency (DGB) made an agreement with the local mayor's office in Villa Tunari, that no more work would be done on the road until a new home was made for the animals in its path. Well yesterday (18th September), the destruction of the park continued in spite of this agreement. Trees fell onto monkey runners in the mirador section of the park, even a volunteer was nearly crushed by a falling tree. We ask that this blatant disregard for the environment AND their own laws be denounced through any means possible, contact your local paper, your national TV station, anyone which could help to cease this carnage. top THE FUTURE OF PARQUE MACHIA AT RISK!!
In early August 2008, we received a visit from public works technicians from the Mayors office in Villa Tunari, with the view to inspecting Parque Machia as a route for a new planned road. Following the visit, we requested further information from the Mayors office about the planned project. Following this request, the 19th of August, we receive an official notification from the Mayor’s office – CITE H.A.M V.T Nº 884-08 – inviting us to a meeting to discuss this project. This meeting was attended by only one of the public works technicians (none of the council officials), where a five minute talk informed us of the definitive decision to open a road through the Park. The main reasons given for the opening of the road were to give more access for the communities further into the forest, and to allow greater access for tourism in vehicles. To determine the opening of this road, many criteria were not considered, such as:
The areas which would be directly affected would be the following
This is why we have concluded that no consideration has been made for the wellbeing of the animals, not to mention the fact that Parque Machia is considered an area of National Heritage, meaning no damage to the biological, genetic and ecological diversity should be allowed. On the 20th August the same year, we received a communication from the Mayor’s office, we were instructed that the animals would need to be moved and accommodated elsewhere, to allow the start of construction. We were visited by members fo the council on the 27th August, consisting of the director of environment, director of tourism, two councillors, an architect, civil engineer and a representative of the company contracted to open the road, who informed us we had 5 days to move and re house the animals. An appeal was made to the local authorities and to the press, and the work was stopped. The Mayor stated to the press that the road would no longer be made. This turned out to be a lie, because this year the work began again to open the road. We appealed again to the environmental and local authorities to explain what this would mean. At this point the National Environment Agency (DGBAP) intervened, but even they did not have the power to stop this destruction. That said, the Mayor of Villa Tunari commited to provide new land for the expanson of the land – although this never took place. Even more shocking was, this year on the 18th August, the work began on opening the road, without any authorization from the authorities or any environmental impact study – a legal requirement. The animals are already being affected by this work. The noise from the tractors and chainsaws are making many of the primates and felines more aggresive, and many of the animals are being scared off, putting their lives in serious danger. [Articulo de opinion.com] top House has been bought! Monday 10th March 2008 We're delighted to say that the house (which was campaigned for back in last September) has finally been bought and contracts have exchanged hands. After a long and drawn out process, where negotiations seemed to be never ending, both buyers and sellers came to an agreement, and CIWY's place in Villa Tunari is so much more secure than it has ever been. The ownership of the building which houses the cafe, clinic and vet's accommodation, plus the Casa de Voluntarios, plus land behind where the quarantine areas are, allows the park to make the improvements they have been wanting to for many years but haven't been able to as the buildings weren't theirs. The food preparation area will move to the casa, as will a more organised administration area, both of which were essential improvements to be able to gain the "official eco-park" status from the Bolivian government. Once again, THANK YOU to everyone who has helped! top Un mensaje por parte de Juan Carlos Antezana, Fundador de Inti Wara Yassi

Dear volunteers!
For me it is a great joy to have you working here at the Inti Wara Yassi
refuges. Working non-stop to help our brothers and sisters, the pumas, jaguars,
monkeys, birds and snakes! God bless you, you are the 'Inti Wara Yassis', you
are the people who have gained our highest respect because you are working not
for yourself, but for a whole community of people here in Bolivia, our family
of children, people, animals that all wish to defend life. Although this takes a
lot of sacrifice we have managed together to set up these two refuges to give
the animals a second chance and to give you the opportunity of helping out.
I wish you all the best for 2008! That it may be a year full of success
stories.
Say it aloud to the world: say the word Inti, the word Wara, the word
Yassi!

The response was absolutely incredible - everyone around the world chipped in and I was getting 3 or 4 big donations every day on PayPal alone - I've no idea what the bank account looked like except that WE'VE MADE IT ! ! ! And that the response of everyone around the world is absolutely incredible - I've never known a fundraising drive like it ! I first posted this to the website only 2.5 weeks ago.....(although it was on facebook etc before this). Obviously we've still got to go through all the legal processes and we can't completely relax until everything's signed, but even though there's still this uncertainty we thought it best to let everyone know how amazing everyone's been. A special mention must be made of the Gibson family and Castle Precision Engineering, who donated an unbelievable $20,000 / £10,000. All the very best to everyone - * * * * you're amazing ! ! ! ! ! ! ! * * * * Chris top Urgent Appeal! consisting of 'the casa' in which many of the Bolivian workers live alongside some temporary volunteers, the volunteer cafe, the veterinary clinic, the monkey quarantine and the small animals area are no longer to be rented to them. The woman who owns the buildings and land now wants to sell it and has given them 2 weeks to find US$30,000 to buy it, or she will sell it to her son who is likely it seems to turn the area into a restaurant. I cannot stress enough how vital this area is to the park and how devastating it would be to loose it, so please if you can spare even a tiny donation, click here to visit the donate page. top US Visa Change From 1 Dec you will need a visa to enter Bolivia: This Warden Message is being issued to notify American citizens traveling to and residing in Bolivia of the new visa requirement for American citizens entering Bolivia as tourists. The Bolivian government announced earlier this month that effective December 1, 2007, U.S. citizens seeking to enter Bolivia as tourists must first obtain an entry visa from a Bolivian diplomatic post nearest their place of residence by submitting an application, and presenting documentation that includes proof of economic solvency, itinerary and lodging, a police record , and yellow fever vaccination. The U.S. Embassy in La Paz, Bolivia has requested clarification regarding this policy and we are awaiting further information from Bolivian officials. Please continue to direct specific inquiries to the Bolivian Embassy in Washington or your nearest Bolivian Consulate (see here for contact information). If you are in Bolivia, please contact Bolivian Immigration Services at 211-0960. An unofficial translation of the Bolivian government decree can be found on the U.S. Embassy website here. top Flyer for prospective volunteers created Click here to download a leaflet inviting people to come and volunteer, with all the basic details, 4 to an A4 sheet. top Message from Nena - news about Sama We are very happy because for long time we had a dream about giving Sama a better life and I want to tell you that thanks to God this dream has come true. Thanks to a person who felt in her heart the need to give a big donation to buy the construction materials, this person is Vanesa, whom we'd like to thank from our heart and we wish God will bless her through her life. We would also like to thank Quest Overseas and specially Tim's group because it was them who did the toughest work carrying the stones and all the materials. Thanks to all the volunteers in Ambue Ari who help with this work next to Quest people. We also did a party in Ambue to collect some money to buy the cement.
