Co-Founder & President

Tania 'Nena' Baltazar is a Co-Founder and the current President and legal representative of CIWY. In her role, she helps to plan and run the organization.

Born in the Yungas region of La Paz, Nena studied physiotherapy and later biology at the University of La Paz, where she met Juan Carlos Antezana. In 1992 they founded Comunidad Inti Wara Yassi, developing activities in defense of the environment and of wildlife.

In 1996 Nena, along with Juan Carlos, opened Bolivia’s first wildlife refuge in Villa Tunari, Chapare, Cochabamba. Nena volunteered for 14 years as the shelter’s Managing Director, before being elected into her current position.

Nena’s dedication to CIWY and love for animals makes her an inspirational leader to all that work for the organization. She has made the organization and its mission her life's work.

In 1998, Nena received the Prize for' Women's Creativity in Rural Life' from the Women's World Summit Foundation (WWSF) for her work towards the preservation of nature. She was the youngest woman to ever receive a prize from WWSF.

CIWY Advisor

Verónica Gomez, born in La Paz, studied veterinary medicine at the University of Trinidad. From a young age, she got involved in voluntary work in many different areas; this is how she came to arrive at Ambue Ari as a volunteer in 2004, becoming the Centre's first Veterinarian. Her contribution and involvement were vital to Ambue Ari's development. She also worked as a Veterinarian in Machía. In 2011, after a break from the organization, she took on the role of managing CIWY's education programme.

Director of Communications

Marta Stuckenschmidt, born in Germany, studied Business Administration in Berlin and Bilbao. She came to Bolivia in 2008 as a volunteer in a social project, the moment when she found out about her passion for this country and its people. In 2014, after finishing her degree, she came across the job post for the director of administration at Machia. Since 2016 she has been doing all the communication for CIWY.
