Socrates was held as a family pet in La Paz. He was bound with an iron chain in the family's balcony exposed to the elements. La Paz's high altitude and severe temperature changes are far from the warm temperate climate of the jungle that is the Squirrel Monkey's natural home. Socrates was also abused by his owner, underfed and in poor condition. Like many animals, he was seized by the police and brought to the refuge. Here he became the dominant male of the squirrel monkey group and since his arrival he has sired many offsprings.
