Bibi is probably the worst case of abuse that CIWY has seen within the Spider Monkey species.

Bibi was kept as a pet by a man who abused her both sexually and physically. She often escaped from his house, and on one of these occasions his neighbour reported Bibi to the police. She was rescued by CIWY and taken to Parque Machia where she was bloated and depressed. Clinical analyses showed traces of human sperm.

Due to the extensive psychological trauma that Bibi had experienced, her introduction to the group was slow and challenging for both her and the volunteers working with her. She was painfully shy with the monkeys, very uncomfortable around male volunteers and extremely clingy with the female volunteers.

Bibi has now lived in the park for over 4 years and is daily growing in confidence. She remains low in the hierarchy, however is good friends with the alpha male, Mickey, which is reducing the amount of time that she is picked on. She still struggles with new male volunteers, however she is spending more and more time with monkeys and less with volunteers, and we hope that the traumas of her previous life and now a distant memory.
